ASBES

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
I.                    BACKGROUND
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that was widely used not only in developing countries but also in developed countries like the United States. In the United States , asbestos was used as insulation material. There are many types of asbestos fibers but the most common are krisotil, amosit and krokidolit, everything is a chain magnesium silicate hydrate unless krokidolit which is a silicate of sodium and iron. Krokidolit and amosit has a large iron content. Chrysotile is found in the pages of the roll, the fibers form a hollow like a tube with a diameter of about 0:03 milimicron . Asbestos fibers are heat resistant and can reach 800 0 C (Abraham, 1994). Because this is the nature of the asbestos used in the construction and manufacturing (Roggli et al. , 1994). More than 30 million tons of asbestos were used in construction and factories in the United States . In addition, asbestos is relatively soluble, high tensile strength, and acid resistance (only amphibole) (Abraham, 1994).
Asbestos can become dry or brittle if it exists digangggu (eg improvement of pipe insulation) or because of age. As a result of microscopic fibers that are invisible to the eye can be divided and suspended in air. Once in the air, asbestos fibers will be settled in the long term and is then inhaled by humans who were in the neighborhood. And its small size makes this asbestos fibers trapped in the lungs ( Anonymous, 1995 ) .

CHAPTER II DISCUSSION

I.                    DEFINITION OF ASBESTOS
Asbestos is a general name for several fibrous silicate minerals. 



Historically, asbestos is known for its resistance to fire and its ability to be woven into the fabric. Because of these properties, asbestos was used to make flame retardant stage curtain for the theater, as well as heat-resistant clothing for metal workers and firefighters. A more modern application of asbestos utilizing chemical resistance and reinforcing properties of the fibers to produce reinforced cement asbestos products, including pipes, sheets and shingles are used in building construction. Asbestos was used as insulation for rocket engines in space exploration and as a component in an electrolytic cell that makes oxygen in the submerged nuclear submarine. Most of chlorine for bleaching, cleaning, and disinfecting is manufactured using asbestos products.


II.                 NATURE OF ASBESTOS
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral chrysotile group consisting of minerals, krokidolit and actinolite. Type composed of mineral chrysotile asbestos produced the most (94% of world production), while compiled by tremolite and actinolite almost no economic value. The properties of asbestos Asbestos has some special properties including:
-           Microscopy, under a microscope, asbestos fibers appear wavy-line.

Physical properties:
-           Strength of asbestos fibers depending on the species, mining and processing.

Chemical properties:

III.              DIVISION OF ASBESTOS
Asbestos can be divided into two parts.
Serpentine group; Chrysotile is a mineral that is magnesium silicate hydroxide with the composition Mg6 (OH) 6 (Si4O11) H2O,
 Amphibole group; namely mineral crocidolite, antofilit, amosit, actinolite and tremolit. Which are widely used in the industry is kind of Chrysotile asbestos. 
Differences in asbestos fibers because of the different fiber length, also because it is different. One type of asbestos fibers in general can be used for many applications such as the length of the fiber to a fine. 
The division on the basis of whether or not asbestos fibers are twisted are:
1.      Asbestos fibers are twisted, used for:
-           Clutch, curtains and screens, gaskets, gloves, bags of asbestos, boilers coatings, wall coverings, clothing fire, brake linings, tires, asbestos textiles, etc. 
-           Fire extinguishers, asbestos yarn, tape, rope, tools presenta-bung steam pipes, electrical equipment, chemical equipment, laboratory gasket needs, and floral wire.
2. The       non-woven fibers comprising:
-           asbestos cement for lining furnaces and boilers and pipes, walls, floors, appliances and electric chemistry
-           Asbestos in the roof;
-           asbestos paper to the floor and roof, pipe cover insulator-insulator of heat and electricity;
-           The walls of asbestos in homes and factories, all kinds of insulation, gaskets, boilers, and furnaces;
-           Various other compounds that use very fine asbestos and asbestos mostly as slurry.
Amphibole asbestos commonly used as a textile fiber material is of the type varieties Crocidolite. It is associated with power Spun suit the needs of the textile industry. Chrysotile and antagonit included in the group of serpentine asbestos. Chrysotile asbestos is also a kind of important in the textile industry.

IV.              PLACE AND HOW ARE MINING

-           Sulawesi
-           Irian
-           Seram (Moluccas)
-           Papua
Asbestos mining can be done by open pit and underground mines, as for the stage include:
-           drilling
-           blasting
-           separation of rock containing asbestos and other rocks
-           processing.

V.                 USE
The use of asbestos in the industry affected by the length of the short fibers of asbestos, for example:
         Asbestos fiber length, fiber to yarn, rope, asbestos cloth, the curtains flame retardant, fire resistant clothing, electrical insulation and thermal, belt conveyor, automobile brake linings, glove, wick, light shirt.

         Asbestos fibers are a mixture of cement, asbestos, making pipes, asbestos sheets, roofing.
         Asbestos fibers are short: the cast refractory material, Various other compounds that use very fine asbestos and asbestos mostly as slurry.
VI.              HOW TO MAKE THE BRIEF
Asbestos is found in the form of fine fibers as a conduit between the rocks. consisting of silicic acid grit and magsenium. VII.           DANGER ASBESTOS

When scratched or rubbed, this dust can easily enter the body through the pores to then develop into skin cancer.  asbestos fibers with a diameter of less than 3 milimicron that will be inhaled through the respiratory tract and retained in the lungs.  Its Durable causing asbestos fibers will stay in the human body for many years. Asbestos fibers can cause irritation pneumoconiosis (from the Greek, means lung pneumonia and conical means dust) in the lungs known as asbestosis , the lung disorder in the long term due to the absorption of asbestos fibers and is well known among occupational health practitioner and health. inorganic particle, which inhaled, such as asbestos, silica can damage the lungs through the formation of free radicals.

In short, it can be concluded, because asbestos diseases include:
1.       Asbestosis is a wound in the lungs until breathing difficulties and can cause death.
2.       Mesothelioma, a cancer that attacks the lining of the stomach and chest, symptoms appear after 20-30 years since the first kalimenghirup asbestos fibers.
3.       Lung cancer, the leading cause of normally white asbestos lung cancer

VIII BENEFITS OF ASBESTOS
1.       As Roof House
The first benefit of asbestos as roofs. Roof made of asbestos can be a substitute for roof made of tiles, and can also be a roof that has a lightweight construction. In addition, asbestos also have prices that tend to be cheaper than the critical value, so few homes that have semi-permanent construction often use asbestos as a roof.

Because it must be done in a way to prevent a reduction in the use of asbestos transparent. Asbestos was often used as the use of the garage. Asbestos materials which tend to be lighter than the tiles can be the first choice for manufacturing roof of the garage. To make this garage would be better if there is a garage windows and doors with windows like a model, as it will provide good air circulation.  The window  will be more suitable for use with the type of asbestos soft with good heat dissipation, so that the garage will not be felt stuffy.

MAKALAH ASBES



BAB I  PENDAHULUAN
I.                   LATAR BELAKANG
Asbes merupakan mineral fibrosa yang secara luas banyak dipakai bukan hanya di negara berkembang melainkan juga di negara yang sudah maju seperti di Amerika. Di Amerika, asbes dipakai sebagai bahan penyekat. Terdapat banyak jenis serat asbes tetapi yang paling umum dipakai adalah krisotil, amosit dan krokidolit, semuanya merupakan silikat magnesium berantai hidrat kecuali krokidolit yang merupakan silikat natrium dan besi. Krokidolit dan amosit mempunyai kandungan besi yang besar. Krisotil terdapat dalam lembaran-lembaran yang menggulung, membentuk serat-serat berongga seperti tabung dengan diameter sekitar 0,03 milimikron. Serat asbes bersifat tahan panas dan dapat mencapai 800 0C (Abraham, 1994). Karena sifat inilah maka asbes banyak dipakai di industri konstruksi dan pabrik (Roggli et al., 1994). Lebih dari 30 juta ton asbes digunakan di dalam konstruksi dan pabrik di Amerika. Selain itu asbes relatif sukar larut, daya regang tinggi, dan tahan asam (hanya amfibol) (Abraham, 1994).
Asbes dapat menjadi kering atau rapuh bila keberadaannya digangggu (misal: perbaikan penyekat pipa) atau oleh karena termakan usia. Akibatnya serat mikroskopis yang tidak terlihat oleh mata tersebut dapat terpecah dan melayang di udara. Sekali terdapat di udara, serat asbes akan menetap dalam jangka waktu yang panjang dan kemudian terhirup oleh manusia yang berada di lingkungan tersebut. Ukuran dan bentuknya yang kecil menyebabkan serat asbes ini terperangkap di dalam paru-paru (Anonim, 1995).

BAB II PEMBAHASAN

I.                   PENGERTIAN ASBES
Asbes adalah nama umum yang berlaku untuk beberapa jenis mineral silikat berserat.
Secara historis, asbes terkenal karena ketahanan terhadap api dan kemampuannya untuk ditenun menjadi kain. Karena sifat ini, asbes digunakan untuk membuat tirai tahan api panggung untuk teater, serta tahan panas pakaian untuk pekerja logam dan petugas pemadam kebakaran. Aplikasi yang lebih modern dari asbes memanfaatkan ketahanan kimia dan sifat penguat serat untuk menghasilkan produk asbes semen yang diperkuat termasuk pipa, lembaran, dan herpes zoster yang digunakan dalam konstruksi bangunan. Asbes juga digunakan sebagai isolasi untuk mesin roket di pesawat luar angkasa dan sebagai komponen dalam sel elektrolitik yang membuat oksigen di kapal selam nuklir terendam. Sebagian besar klorin untuk pemutih, pembersih, dan desinfektan diproduksi menggunakan produk asbes.


II.                SIFAT ASBES
Asbes adalah nama kelompok mineral berserabut yang terdiri dari mineral-mineral krisotil, krokidolit dan aktinolit. Jenis asbes yang tersusun oleh mineral krisolit yang terbanyak diproduksi (94% produksi dunia), sedangkan untuk yang disusun oleh tremolite dan aktinolit hampir tidak memiliki nilai ekonomis. Sifat-sifat asbes Asbes memiliki beberapa sifat khusus antaranya :
-          Mikroskopi, dibawah mikroskop, serat asbes nampak bergelombang-lurus.
-          Permukaan seart kasar hingga mudah selip jika dipintal
Sifat Fisika:
-          Kekuatan serat asbes tergantung jenisnya, cara penambangan dan pengolahannya.
-          Asbes tahan panas dan api. Pada huhu 200-1000 derajat celsius asbes kehilangan berat karena menguapnya air kristal dan karbon dioksida. Titik leleh asbes sekitar 1180 – 1500 derajat celsius.


Sifat kimia:
-           asbes tersusun dari komposisi kikia antara lain SiO2, MgO, OksidaØ Fe, Al2O3, CaO, Na2O dan H2O.

III.             PEMBAGIAN ASBES
1.       Golongan serpentine mengandung mineralchrysotile (Mg6(OH)4Si3O8). Terbentuk dari batuan ultrabasa yang kaya magnesia (penting dalam pertextilan)
2.       Golongan amphibole, mengandung mineral :
o   crocidolite (Na2Fe5((OH)Si4O11)2
o   amosite (Mg, Fe) (OH) Si4O11)2,terbentuk karena proses metamorfosa kontak dari sedimen silika besi.
o   Anthophylite (MgFe)7 ((OH)Si4O11)2  terbentuk dalam proses lensa amphobole dan berasal dari mineral serpentine ultrabasa dengan  komposisi dunite
o   Tremolite (Ca2(Mg, Fe)5((OH)Si4O11)2 ditemukan dalam batuan beku tipe epimagnetik dapat  juga dalam  batu gamping kristalin dan dolomit termetamorf
o   Actinolite(Ca2(Mg,Fe)5(OH)Si4O11)2 terbentuk dalam temperatur relatif rendah dalam kristal skist, dalam batuan beku karena metamorfisme, hydrothermal.

IV.             TEMPAT TERDAPATNYA DAN CARA PENAMBANGAN
keterdapatan endapan asbes di Indonesia berkaitan dengan daerah sebaran batuan basa atau ultrabasa, terdapat di beberapa tempat, seperti:
-          kuningan (jawa barat)
-          jawa tengah
-          Pulau Halmahera
-          Sulawesi
-          Irian
-          Seram (Maluku)
-          papua
Penambangan asbes dapat dilakukan dengan cara tambang terbuka maupun tambang bawah tanah, adapun tahapannya meliputi:
-          pemboran
-          peledakan
-          pemisahan batuan yang mengandung asbes dengan batuan lainnya
-          pengolahan.

V.                PENGGUNAAN
Penggunaan asbes dalam industri dipengaruhi oleh panjang pendeknya serabut asbes misalnya :
         Asbes serabut panjang : dipintal untuk benang, tali, kain asbes, untuk tirai tahan api, baju tahan api, isolasi listrik dan panas, belt conveyor, lapisan rem mobil, kaos tangan, sumbu, kaos lampu.

         Asbes serabut sedang : bahan campuran dalam semen asbes, membuat pipa-pipa, lembaran asbes, atap.
         Asbes serabut pendek : bahan tuang tahan api, Macam-macam bahan campuran lain yang menggunakan asbes sangat halus dan kebanyakan asbes sebagai bubur.
VI.             CARA PEMBUATAN SECARA SINGKAT
Asbes ditemukan dalam alam bentuk serat halus sebagai pembuluh diantara karang-karang. terdiri atas asam kersik dan silikat magsenium. Dengan menghancurkan masa-masa karang, diperoleh serat-serat kemudian dibuat batu asbes. Batu asbes digiling dan disortir akan diperoleh serat asbes lalu serat-serat halus di pintal menggunakan kapas menjadi benang dan untuk menghilangkan kapas benang tersebut dipanggang diatas api, sehingga kapasnya terbakar dan yang tinggal benang asbes.
Cara lain:
Serat-serat asbes tidak dipintal tetapi dipress sebagai lempengan asbes (kertas asbes), atau serat asbes dipress dicampur dengan semen Portland sehingga menjadi lempengan asbes semen. Dan cara mudah memperoleh serat asbes adalah karang yang mengandung asbes di pecah disortir dan diambil batu yang mengandung asbes lalu digiling atau disaring untuk memisahkan antara serat asbes dan batu.

VII.          BAHAYA ASBES
Serat asbes cenderung mudah patah, menjadi debu, tersebar di udara serta lengket pada pakaian maupun tubuh manusia. Serat asbes umumnya berukuran 3 sampai 20 micron, sehingga tidak dapat terlihat secara kasat mata. Tetapi bila diperbesar melalui mikroskop electron, bentuk dari serat asbes adalah lancip dan tajam.
Debu asbes dapat menempel pada kulit dan  menimbulkan gatal-gatal (iritasi). Ketika digaruk atau digosok, debu tadi dapat dengan mudah masuk ke dalam tubuh melalui lubang pori-pori untuk kemudian berkembang menjadi kanker kulit.  Serat-serat asbestos dengan diameter kurang dari 3 milimikron yang terinhalasi akan menembus saluran napas dan tertahan dalam paru-paru.  Sifatnya yang tahan lama yang menyebabkan serat-serat asbes akan tinggal di dalam tubuh manusia selama bertahun-tahun. Serat asbes dapat mengakibatkan gangguan pneumokoniosis (dari bahasa Yunani, pneumon berarti paru-paru dan konis berarti debu) pada paru-paru yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan asbestosis, yaitu gangguan pada paru-paru karena penyerapan jangka panjang serat asbes dan sudah cukup dikenal di kalangan praktisi kesehatan kerja maupun kesehatan lingkungan.  Partikel inorganik, yang terinhalasi, seperti asbes, silika dapat merusak paru-paru melalui pembentukan radikal bebas.

Secara singkat bisa di simpulkan, penyakit karena asbes antara lain adalah:
1.      Asbestosis yaitu luka pada paru-paru hingga kesulitan bernafas dan dapat mengakibatkan kematian.
2.      Mesothelioma, sejenis kanker yang menyerang selaput pada perut dan dada, muncul gejalanya setelah 20-30 tahun sejak pertama kalimenghirup serat asbes.
3.      Kanker paru-paru, biasanya asbes putih penyebab utama penyakit kanker paru-paru
